ACHIEVEMENTS

The ACDPU researches major current issues between the South and the  North including  medium  and long-term tasks for unification, as well as providing consultation and recommendations.

One of the major functions of the ACDPU is to offer productive consultation and recommendations to establish and implement unification policy. In this manner, the official bodies of conference like the Steering and Standing Committees and 10 Subcommittees can vigorously research policies according to each divisional expert.

The focus of research should especially be on providing policy proposals and multi-sided reviews concerning matters like the current South-North relationship or prospective problems during the course of and after the completion of unification. For that purpose, it is crucial for the ACDPU to promote more productive meetings. Through those meetings, it could provide comprehensive plans and recommend them systematically to make provision for future exchange and cooperation between the South and the North in various fields including unification  & national security, diplomacy, economy  & society, culture & arts and religion. Collecting various opinions from experts in each field is also necessary for implementing unification policy toward the North. Expert Meetings and North Korea Research Institute and Seminar on Unification Policy are major policy consultation activities.  Those meetings are for analyzing the variables to the current major issues between the South and the North and preparing for different potential scenarios.

Also, the ACDPU has institutionalized the gathering of opinions on the major current issues, including an opinion survey among domestic and overseas members, with the assistance of the Monitoring Personnel of the ACDPU and Surveying Personnel on Unification Policy. These measures provide the basic information for policy consultation and recommendation.

Projects and supports for providing informational material for the members are actively carried out to enhance their expertise necessary for consultation, recommendation and research on the unification issue.

For the purpose of improving member's capability for consultation on the unification issue, study meetings are being held every year. These are classified and then accordingly organized into three categories: the Study Meetings for Newly Appointed  Members, Study Dialogue Meeting for  Local  Legislators, and the Educational Meeting  on  Unification  mainly for the professional representatives.

In addition, to efficiently providing more information on the tolerance policy towards the North for the public, commentary booklets and overseas publicity materials are being published and distributed.

In addition, the Secretariat publishes organ like Min Ju Pyung Tong (Democratic and Peaceful Unification) (biweekly) and the Complete List of Consultation and Recommendation (yearly) to provide unification related information. They analyze the current South-North issues, make comments on the current situation of policies toward the North, and report the details on the domestic and overseas member's activities. There are also other periodicals necessary for unification related research and public information such as the Situation of South-North exchange and cooperation, North Korean Situation and United News.

The ACDPU establishes pan-National consensus on Unification and National Security Activities are vigorously carried out for helping the people's understanding of the details about the government's policy toward the North.

It helps form national consensus on that issue and unify the nationwide spirit in various sectors of society.

These activities take place both at the central and the local Consultative Council level. They are largely classified into two categories:  one is the Session for  Briefing on the Current Unification Situation for the leaders who steer the public opinions, the other is a meeting for lectures, discussions, or unification dialogue for the general public mainly at the local level.

In particular, the Session for Briefing on the Current Unification Situation and Special Session for Public Relations at the consultative council level are held for the leaders who steer local public opinions all across the country. And other various activities widely inform the public from all parts of the nation for the current progress in adopting unification policy towards the North. During the Special session for Public Relations, many lectures or report meetings at the local and professional level are held with a special slogan or banner. In addition, the local level lectures and briefings are prepared, tour dialogues for discussing unification issues are held in town, sub-county or neighborhood block. And for Business or Social Organizations, Touring lectures are also readied.

So far, the District Councils have developed and planned their specialized projects by finding model activities that are suitable for their local characteristics, and operate them autonomously at the local level. They also prepare for the Open Forum on unification issue with the participation of unification experts, scholars and North Korean defectors. This forum has been integral as a part of the Unification Lectures for principals, vice-principals and moral and ethics teachers at elementary, middle and high schools. It has  earned its outstanding  reputation by providing unification related information and expert knowledge.

The ACDPU educates future generations with the proper perspective on the unification issue.

The ACDPU carries out a diverse set of activities that seek to establish, among the next generation, a correct understanding of the North Korean situation and a future image of a unified Korea.

Each year during vacation periods, the Unification Forum for University Students is hosted in 16 metropolitan areas and provinces. District councils also host a Presentation on Policies toward the North for middle and high school students. Every year, over 500,000 students participate in this presentation.  In addition, at the district council level, the ACDPU designates some schools as models for unification education and provides more complete and concise information for future generations.

For more efficient education on unification, the ACDPU provides realistic data and information through the use of visual materials like VTR that have documented recent circumstances in the North.

Moreover, the district council itself autonomously helps young adults to elevate their interest in the unification issues and encourages their active participation through various activities including essay contests and speech contests on unification related subjects.

The ACDPU members  make every effort to expand  support for unification  in international  society and play active roles as international ambassadors.

Overseas Council members are carrying out various activities abroad to enhance national prestige and serve as outposts for the unification of Korea.

Activities abroad have enhanced understanding of our policies toward the North among Koreans abroad. They also invite respected speakers including Inter-Korean specialists or scholars to host seminars, workshop and special lectures on the Korean peninsula issues as well as collecting public opinions on current policies toward the North and expand the support base for Korean unification through international organizations and press media.

Also, the ACDPU sends North Korean experts and defectors abroad to areas with high concentration of Koreans to host periodic  special lectures and discussion meetings to provide an accurate picture of the North Korean situation.

Along with these activities, the ACDPU seeks indirect means to support change in the North. When overseas Koreans visit North Korea or contact North Korean residents, the advancement of the South is consistently publicized.
